Jim Paulson Joins Scripps CHAVI-ID

Dr. Jim Paulson, Professor and Chair of the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology at The Scripps Research Institute, has joined the Scripps CHAVI-ID as a Principal Investigator in the Glycobiology Scientific Research Support Component.

Dr. Paulson's research focuses on carbohydrate binding proteins in the regulation of immune function. In collaboration with CHAVI-ID investigators, he developed a novel method for glycomics analysis of HIV gp140, addressing a need for rapid analysis of glycosylation that can readily detect differences in glycosylation status of recombinant proteins produced in different cells and compare the glycosylation of gp120/140 from different virus strains. Within the CHAVI-ID, Dr. Paulson's work will focus on the assessment of the glycosylation status of envelope gp120/160 on intact virus and virus particles in tissue culture cells and peripheral blood mononuclear cells as well as gp140 trimers produced for vaccine trials for comparison with future vaccine candidates.
